Founded in 2007 by Italian-born/Ireland-based pianist, accordionist and percussionist Francesco Turrisi, the Tarab Ensemble aims to fuse modal jazz with traditional music from across Europe.

Turrisi, a Milan native with a background in Italian baroque music and jazz piano has brought a fresh perspective to music in Ireland.  In Tarab, he performs on accordion and frame drums and convincingly bridges traditional music from across the Mediterranean, in a band that also includes saxophonist Nick Roth and cellist Kate Ellis.  Their jazz and classical backgrounds and finely countered by traditional flautist Emer Maycock, who along with percussionist Robbie Harris, brings an innate understanding of melody and form in Irish music.  Turrisi directs proceedings with taste and subtlety throughout, deftly balancing these powerful elements to harmonious effect.

Throughout 2010, Tarab has been involved in 'Quatrain', a major four-part project that has seen them come together as 'ensemble in residence' at Bray's Mermaid Arts Centre, to create new music with special international guest artists.  This project concludes in November, when the group will be joined by masterful Greek singer and ECM artist Savina Yannatou.

A leading interpreter of barque, renaissance and early music, Savina Yannatou is one of the most respected singers in Greek music.  She is known not only for her mastery of older, formal repertoire, but also for her experiences in experimental music.

Tarab Ensemble featuring Savina Yannatou in presented by Improvised Music Company and Mermaid Arts Centre and is supported by Arts Council Ireland.
